I love absolutely immersing myself into different cultures, especially when travelling to different places. I have been quite lucky that throughout my younger life I was able to travel the world quite a lot with my family, it made me very open to trying new things and it also got my taste buds going.
I’m a massive foodie as well, when it comes to trying a new place to eat, finding a fantastic recipe or just creating something crazy and unique in the kitchen I am down. All of these things got me thinking about some of my favourite foods and where in the world they come from.
Chinese is one of my favourite cuisines and always has been. I think it was possibly one of the first ever ‘take away’ foods I ever tried when I was younger and it was instant love. Now, one place I haven’t actually been to is China but I would absolutely love to go to taste the food there. I can imagine how great it would be, how you would find little food stalls in the market serving things you have never heard of before and setting your taste buds alive.
I’m partial to peking duck in a huge abundance and any noodle dish going, the flavours that any Chinese dish seems to pack in really are a combination to keep you coming back for more.
Mexican food is my absolute love. I am all about hard hitting and spicy flavours, their use of chilli in almost anything really is what draws me in to Mexican food.
I have so many favourite dishes I don’t even know where to begin but lets start with the basics – A good Burrito, Quesadilla and Taco are the best places to start. Add some Refried Beans, Gaucamole, Tamales filled with anything you like and you have got a feast fit for anyone.
Pozole, a traditional soup styled stew is one of my absolute favourite dishes from Mexico. If you have never tried it make sure you do! It’s created using Hominy, with meat (usually pork) and garnished with shredded cabbage, chilli peppers, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, salsa or limes. It really is a beautiful dish and one that will take you to Mexico over and over again.
Greek food is probably in my top two favourite foods, I just love the way that everything is so fresh and looks so inviting. Coming from a family with a huge Mediterranean heritage it’s no wonder this is the food I am typically inclined to eat.
I love Moussaka, a dish made typically from aubergines and ground mince. It’s probably a dish that everyone has tried at least once and really is like ‘The Greek Shepard’s Pie’.
Some of my other favourite dishes include Souvlaki (kebabs), Kakavia (fish soup) and Baklava – The best dessert you will ever eat in your life, it’s made with layers of filo pastry, chopped nuts and held together with the most beautiful syrup.
There are so many different dishes in Spanish food but what I love the most is Tapas. A way of eating a bit of everything and really filling up on the food you love. I frequent Spain a lot, I love the culture, the food and it’s also where my family originate from so I feel a strong pull towards there.
Spanish omlette is a favourite, along with gambas al ajillo (Spicy Garlic Grilled Prawns), patatas bravas (Spicy Spanish Potatoes) and any sort of jamon serrano (ham). Pair that with lots of bread, olives and Aioli, you’re onto a winner.
