Research has shown that the colour shirt a man chooses to wear helps to see how the world, especially women perceive them. If a man is looking to come across powerful, he will often choose a red shirt. If a man wants to come across as confident, a black shirt is his shirt of choosing. Where as white shirts can signify a sense of optimism.
Charles Tyrwhitt, experts in gentlemen’s fashion and men’s formal shirts have done some research to find out exactly what colour shirts women prefer on men.
Red is associated with romance, as it signifies love and passion. If you’re on a date and someone decides to wear this it can give off and overpowering vibe, however it does give off that your date is interested.
Red is also a great colour to go for if you are wanting to show you are powerful and hold a strong social status. Researchers found that wearing red can actually boost your own confidence, which can be great for things like first dates.
One survey even found that women love men in red shirts compared to say a blue or green shirt.
Many may think black is a morbid colour, but I actually love it when a man wears a black shirt. My partner wore one on our first ever date and I can always remember thinking he looked really confident, it was highly attractive.
Black is quite similar in its meanings to that of a red shirt. It can be perceived as a colour of self-assurance. Many women have said that it helps inspire confidence, and that men who wear black appear intelligent and sexy – Perfect for a first date!
White is a colour that is the least offensive when it comes to clothing colours. Many perceive it as a happy colour, when you wear it you feel very optimistic about life and aren’t in the least bit arrogant.
For women, men who wear a white shirt and jeans as an outfit came out on top. They said men who wore this came across as highly more attractive.
Some colours aren’t particularly appealing when it comes to the opposite sex. Many said that colours like orange and brown weren’t exactly doing it for them, they perceived the wearer to be quite drab and boring. Although, a bright orange shirt on a bright summers day can actually work in the opposite way.
Pink was another colour that doesn’t go down too well. Only 5% of people say that wearers of pink are intelligent people.
Tips to choosing a coloured shirt
- If you have a light complexion avoid wearing dark colours. It can really draw your skin tone out and make you look paler.
- Many men look great in a shirt that matches their eye colour. So a nice royal blue shirt for those with blue eyes or a moss green shirt for those with green would suit nicely.
- For those with darker hair, bright colours work really well and are likely to compliment you more.
