There is always so much going on during the holidays. Though I admittedly spend most of it running around the city and focusing on family activities close to home, there is an appeal to getting away during the holidays for some quality time with family. Some families take advantage of the holidays to squeeze in a family trip. Luckily, Europe offers travellers so many options with flight times kept to a minimum.
Here are 4 destinations (to warmer climates) that are close and perfect for a short trip.
The island of Sicily is, yes, part of Italy but is unlike anywhere else in the world. It has a mixed heritage (Arab, Greek, Norman, and Norman) and offers a rich cultural experience and all the island activities of your dreams. You can relax at the beach, wander up Mount Etna, see a traditional puppet show in Palermo, visit UNESCO World Heritage sites, and take in the views from wherever you choose. Plus, there is incredible food that you will remember forever and locals who cherish family time and are warmly supportive of family travel. When travelling as a family, it is highly recommended to check out one of the many villas in Sicily for rent, as prices are more affordable for one villa rather than multiple rooms elsewhere. Plus, that way you get privacy and the ultimate feel of what it’s like to settle in and make yourself at home in Sicily.
Malta is both affordable and very suitable for family travel. English is also widely spoken on the island, which can help relieve some stress, especially when travelling with the whole family. Temperatures are moderate in Malta, so you can dine by the sea, walk through Valletta’s Upper or Lower Barrakka Gardens for some gorgeous views, and go for some tapas at an outdoor café. In case you want to venture inside, head to the Malta National Aquarium at the north end of the island.
Tenerife is only a four-hour flight from the UK, making it doable for families even with young children. Tenerife has beautiful beaches, views at every turn, nightlife if you want to mix a bit of it in, and plenty of activities to do with the family. Though it is known for nightlife, there is a whole other side to the island that is wonderful for family travel. Check out Costa Adeje for accommodation, a preferred spot for many families as it is far away enough from the nightlife. Plus, in Costa Adeje, there is Siam Park, which according to TripAdvisor is the best waterpark in Europe.
Lisbon was once awarded the Best European Destination. It is a city on the water with friendly people, wonderful food and the right size city to have enough to do but not be too overwhelmed. With the family, you can do a tour dedicated especially for kids with Little Lisbon Tours, stop at world-famous Pasteis de Belem for a classic custard tart, and hire a bike to wander along the river Tagus. As you explore the city and get tired of walking, catch a cable car for a whole other fun experience!
These are only 4 of the many wonderful European destinations out there. Where are your favourite places to go on holiday?
